Four Trends That Are Depriving Your Child Of Physical Activity

S
Are your children getting the physical activity they need? If modern trends have anything to do with this, I am guessing no. Our world has changed a lot in the past two decades, and the rate of change seems to be speeding upone unfortunate side effect is a more sedentary lifestyle for both us and our children. Here are four modern trends that might be leading to a future of unhealthy adults.

1. Internet Lifestyles

The internet has radically transformed our lives and liberated our minds in ways unimaginable. Any hobby we want to learn, any skill we want to develop, any information we want to obtainpractically anything can be found online for free with some due diligence.

The downside to this is a nation spending more and more time online instead of outside getting the exercise they need. Everyone from eight-year olds to grandmas are spending a huge chunk of their time on Facebook or surfing for hours. Sedentary lifestyles are a major culprit behind many modern diseases.

2. Mobile Technology

Hand in hand with that trend is the growing use of mobile technology, which is set to dwarf any form of communication we have ever seen. People that do leave their computers often have some type of mobile device in hand and spend a great deal of their time checking into their social media accounts anyhow. This distracts them from what they are doing and makes it more likely their idle time will be spend being, well, idle.

And believe it or not, a great portion of these mobile users are children.

3. State of Paranoia

A mass media seemingly hell-bent on scaring the wits out of us had done a great job of doing so, and as a result, many parents are irrationally frightened about all the dangers that await children these days. For this reason, many refuse to take their sights off of the kidsand would rather have them sitting in front of the computer screen than a host of other things they could be doing.

Much of modern paranoia is simply caused by media coverage of only the darkest things in humanity.

4. Busy Parents

To top it all off, parents are busier than ever before, and with the current economic turmoil, it is less likely than ever before to survive on just one parent's income. What it adds up to is parents squeezing more tasks into fewer hours, and there just isn't time to arrange for activity-based weekend outings or even just take the kids to the parks.

It is clear that in this day and age, if you want to combat the trends and give children a healthy start, you will need to go the extra mile to get them the physical activity they need. It may take swimming upstream in today's culture, and it may take making some sacrifices in income, but a lifetime of healthy habits is worth every bit.
