Bringing Up Baby with an Environmentally-Conscious Point of View

S
New moms and dads always want the best for their baby, but sometimes its not always obvious what the best actually is. There are many products on the market that claim to be great for our little ones, but nothing trumps what comes from nature. Breast milk, fresh fruits and veggies, organic clothing and bedding, and activities like walking are optimal choices for bringing up baby with an environmentally-conscious point of view.

It is widely known that breast milk is superior to infant formula as it has been proven that baby thrives when receiving this natural nourishment. It has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last decade because parents have become more aware that breast milk is better for babys immune system. Along with the health benefits breast feeding is also free and easy (once you get the hang of it). Breast milk is the perfect consistency and temperature for baby and more convenient than the ritual of preparing formula in the middle of the night. Also, the less formula bottles and canisters you have to buy the better for your pocket book and the better for our landfills. Whichever way you choose, just dont forget the burp cloths. Your kiddo will be making messes all over the house and these handy reusable wipes are ideal for unexpected clean-ups.

Another hint is to buy fruits and veggies that are in season and grown locally. You can find these foods at your local farmers market. These are an excellent place to find fresh pears, apples, persimmons, squash, sweet potatoes and yams; all of which are easy to puree in a food mill. Once baby food has been pureed storing it in BPA free containers for future use is a great plan. My experience is that food purchased at a farmers market keeps longer in the refrigerator than food purchased at a supermarket. Making your own baby food will also save you money and reduce the use of glass jars and plastic containers that baby food usually comes in when you buy it at a super market.

Organic clothing and bedding that are free of dyes are the best choice for your little darling. Also using organic cloth diapers helps prevent diaper rash, saves you money and keeps a hefty amount of diapers out of your local landfill.

Walking around the neighborhood and strolling to your local store are fantastic ways to stay fit, save gas, and get your precious angel exploring the world. And keep your baby even closer by putting him or her in a sling. Baby sling carriers keep your baby close to your torso, while allowing you to have your hands free. Once your baby can crawl and walk it will be time for some comfy shoes. Wee squeak is a brand that encourages your babys walking skills by emitting a squeak sound when they are walking properly.

These are just a few hints and tools you can use to stay environmentally minded while raising your little one. So, after breast feeding your baby, and changing the cloth diaper, put the baby in a sling and walk to the farmers market!
