How Much Does It Cost To Hire A Nanny?

S
The advantages of hiring a nanny include the wonderful individual attention for your child or children that the nanny can provide. Your children are cared for in their own home, a comfortable and familiar environment, and are reachable at all times. Furthermore, some nannies are accustomed to helping around the house with various chores.

But how much does hiring a nanny cost?

Its difficult to say exactly how much a nanny salary should be, because each family has different needs, qualification and experience requirements. Apart from these differences, there are also many other variables that may affect and determine a nannies salary. These may include transportation costs, costs of alternative childcare options, taxes and the current costs of living and economic climate.

The hourly and weekly nanny salary ranges indicated below may be used as guidelines based on a wide range of factors. Lets take a look at some of these factors:

Nanny responsibilities

Some families want their nannies to focus all of their attention on their children, and not to worry about anything else, while other families prefer their nannies to help with the kids, as well as with any light housework, laundry, grocery shopping and cooking meals. Some nannies may even provide additional household management services such as handling bills, overseeing gardening, kitchen and cleaning staff. Higher salaries are expected by nannies whose services demand greater responsibility.

As one nanny, put it, My job encompasses the role of a counselor, dietitian, teacher, friend, parent, role model, and coach.

How many children will the nanny be caring for?

The rule of thumb is that the more children the nanny needs to take care of, the higher the salary.

Child's age?

Usually the work of a nanny to infants is constant, while preschoolers are more able to help themselves, and therefore sometimes the duties are less labour intensive. Consider the age of your child when you are thinking about how much to pay a nanny.

Is the position live-in or live-out?

Live-in nannies will also see adjustments to their salaries, since they will be saving on rent, transportation, utilities, food, etc. For live in nannies, it will be necessary to provide them with a private room, usually with a private bathroom too. Free room and board is a condition of most live in nanny contracts, but salaries can be adjusted downwards as the family will need to cover food and utility costs.

Is the position part-time or full-time?

The nannies salary will also depend on whether you are hiring them on a part-time or full-time basis. Part-time nannies work on an hourly rate, generally between 10- 12 an hour, while full-time nannies usually work on a weekly rate, usually between 400 - 600 a week.

Experience and education

The education and experience of the nanny is an important deciding factor. If you are looking for someone who is very experienced and who has First Aid, CPR training and childcare education credentials, you can count on paying more for their services. However, someone new to the industry would cost you less.

These are some of the factors that need to be considered when determining how much to offer a nanny.
